STORY HIGHLIGHTS Cattle traders in the rural region of Sikasso in southern Mali have boosted their incomes by adopting new cattle fattening techniques. Training and financial support from a World Bank agricultural project enabled traders to build fences, sheds, and troughs on their lots.
Approach. Feed the Future supports Mali’s agriculture-led growth and nutrition in Mopti, Sikasso, and Timbuktu regions. Its approach focuses on investment in the rice, millet, sorghum, and livestock sectors, as well as horticulture and agroforestry crops with the goal of improving economic opportunity, resilience, and nutrition among target populations.
With 80 percent of its population engaged in agricultural activities, the sector is the cornerstone of Mali’s economy and holds great potential for driving economic growth. Feed the Future, the U.S. Government’s global hunger and food security initiative, increases agricultural and nutrition by delivering technology and knowledge, and building local institutional capacity to spur a vibrant.
